From my years of automotive experience, backfires are caused by some circumstances changing the air fuel realtionship as it leaves the engine. The smallest air leak at the header flange will allow air (oxygen) to enter the airstream on decel when the pressure drops in the exhaust to less the atmospheric. May seal itself like a one way check valve on normal operation so you have trouble finding it. Or of the mixture is lean or fuel has puddled in the intake and suddenly arrives on the scene at throttle shut off, it will backfire. The intake manifold is short on the LS650 so that should be minimal problem. Lean fuel mixtures (less fuel than needed for optimal combustion) is a fact of life on stock Savages. Try adjusting it as suggested to help. Remember they are manufactured that way to satisfy the requirements of the US EPA and other country equivalents and to change them does break the law. Maybe you can find a lawyer here on the site to explain how to resolve that part. Max
